THE scene is set for a big Pirelli Pole Battle Saturday at the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour, following a competitive Friday at Mount Panorama.
Four different brands topped the four sessions on Friday, with BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-AMG and Audi all at the top of the timesheets across the day.
It’s still to play for, with a number of expected outright win contenders yet to show their full hand, as is often the case in sportscar racing.
However, the pace will need to come in at some stage, courtesy of a new-for-2025 qualifying format.
As part of the changed regulations, a revised qualifying format will see the 10-car Shootout for the Allan Simonsen Pole Award determined by both Qualifying 1 and Qualifying 2.
In turn, the first qualifying session will be comprised of the bottom 50% of cars from Practice 6, while the second qualifying session features the top 50%.
The results of Q1 and Q2 will determine the 10 cars which will progress to the final phase of qualifying.
Part 3 of Pirelli Qualifying will see an all-in, 10-car session dubbed the Pirelli Pole Battle, with the quickest car claiming the Allan Simonsen Pole Award.
Through 160 uninterrupted minutes of practice on Friday, the #32 Team WRT BMW ended the day with the fastest time, a 2:02.9000s, set in Practice 1, ahead of the #75 75 Energy Mercedes-AMG.
Eight of the day's 10 fastest times came in Practice 1, with the #183 Jamec Racing/Team MPC Audi and #91 The Bend Porsche recording their best times in Practice 3.
Practice resumes on Saturday at 8:35am local time. Click here to view the track schedule.
